Customer Rating: Summary: NOT FOR LAPTOPSComment: I just received this item and was very disappointed that the clip is not made for laptops. When I did the search thru Amazon "web cams for laptops" this item comes up first. I cannot speak to the quality or performance but I hope this helps someone else not make the same mistake.Customer Rating: Summary: Microsoft LifeCame VX-3000Comment: This is my third Microsoft LifeCam. We bought one for each of our kids in the last two years and we love them! Great price, great value!Customer Rating: Summary: another great hardware device from MicrosoftComment: This webcam works great. It was easy to install and very easy to operate. I have never been dissapointed by any of Microsoft's hardware devices.Customer Rating: Summary: Worth it's costComment: This camera is certainly not the nicest out there, but it does the trick for around $30. Picture is decent.Customer Rating: Summary: Using with XP 4 stars. Using with Linux 0 stars.Comment: I purchased the Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 Pack which contained two cameras. One was for me and one for family who were visiting from out of town. My visitors had their laptop with them so I offered to install it for them. On their laptop, which runs Windows XP Home, the install went fine with no major problems.
The problems set in when I tried to install the camera on my desktop computer. I run Ubuntu Linux and the camera will not work with it. I spent about four hours searching through tech support forums and trying different suggested fixes, but in the end it just will not work. I should have known better than to try using a Microsoft hardware product with an Open Source Operating System - Ubuntu. In my research several people suggested switching to a Logitech camera and related that they were able to easily use them with all different Linux flavored OS's to include Ubuntu. Now I just have to find a friend who runs Windows XP that I can give the VX-3000.
